Only Medical Term Search Engine that Searches Colloquial Expressions Used by Clinicians

LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–HIMSS Conference–Artificial Medical Intelligence (AMI) today announced EMscribe® Dynamic Search. This medical term and coding search tool is the only system that leverages the constantly changing and often informal medical terminology used by physicians on a day to day basis. Today AMI also announced EMscribe® Encoder, coding and reimbursement software (see today’s other announcement).

There are over 141,000 ICD-10 codes and approximately 7800 CPT codes in the official corpus of medical terminology and code sets. Medical practitioners employ a large range of terms when referring to medical conditions and procedures and when searching for a correct code, exact matches almost never happen. Physicians are constrained to use the existing codes and terminology in their EMRs, and they are faced with the daunting task of selecting from the limitations of these terms which can be quite difficult and confusing at times. Errors in medical term and code lookup are inevitable as is evidenced by the frequently cited error rates amongst medical coders of 20 to 30 percent along with the frequency of reimbursement denials received from finance.

EMscribe DynamicSearch is unique because its search capability not only searches the standard corpus of medical terminology in the public domain, but also retrieves the colloquial expressions used daily by clinicians when documenting and treating patients. The data comes directly from AMI’s global dictionary used by its Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC) application to capture medical terms and associated codes nationwide. The dictionary is constantly updated to account for and assimilate site specific terminology such as slang, abbreviations and other unique medical terms not found in the traditional coding and medical textbooks.

The search tool works like popular browser search engines and pulls in new data daily to the existing medical term data repository which contains millions of terms and is constantly growing. The result is the most extensive, continuously updated and dynamic medical term and coding system lookup for all levels of healthcare.

“The words a user inputs to look up a medical code vary greatly and until now, there was no solution available that could accept the wide variety of words or phrases as input,” said Elliott Familant, CTO, AMI. “Whether in support of physician care, revenue cycle management, consumer use, administrative or existing healthcare infrastructure, EMscribe DynamicSearch takes the existing medical term and code searching products to the next level and significantly improves coding productivity and accuracy.”

EMscribe DynamicSearch is offered in a variety of different ways. It is available for EMR and healthcare software vendors as an add-on application through AMI’s API. For users, consumers and providers, it will be available as a smartphone application for Android and iPhone. This feature will also be assimilated into the EMscribe product suite, which can be used in conjunction with AMI’s CAC/NLP solution as well as the EMscribe Encoder.

AMI will showcase its new EMscribe DynamicSearch solution at booth #465 at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2016 Annual Meeting and Exhibition, taking place Feb. 29 – March 4, at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas, NV.

Artificial Medical Intelligence, Inc. (AMI) is a software developer of health information technology solutions since its incorporation in 2002. AMI initially targeted the labor intensive medical coding process, with its premier offering, EMscribe®, a proprietary Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) solution. EMscribe® was first commercialized in 2005, providing a software platform for the medical coding of free text electronic documents for the inpatient and outpatient hospital environment. Through continued version updates, the EMscribe® software became comprehensive for all medical record processing by provisioning for all medical record systems including ICD-10 CM/PCS, DSM, LOINC, PQRS and E & M. AMI has also diversified its solution to accommodate, clinics and physician practices. Additionally, the solution was augmented to provide a platform for numerous other medical language capabilities touching on revenue cycle, clinical documentation improvement and clinical decision making enhancements vital for the efficient information gathering and support of the medical record for the healthcare industry.
